My 30 Day Keto Diet Diary

To no surprise, I really lack self-control when it comes to sweets. I can never have just one cookie or a bite of cake. I always overindulge in sweets and end up feeling sick. It’s a vicious cycle and I never learn my lesson. I am the kind of person where I either eat whatever I want or I follow a strict diet that doesn’t allow me to have sweets. This is why I diet all the time and have tried Whole30, 21 Day Fix and The Bone Broth Diet. I had heard of the Keto Diet before and was very intrigued by it. You don’t get to eat carbs (which really sucks) but you get to eat cheese, heavy cream and pure sticks of butter. Seems like it could be witchcraft but why not give it a try?! I was nervous about getting the keto flu but was determined to give it a full 30 days to see if you could really lose weight while stuffing your face with cheese and butter. Here is my weekly diary while I was on the Keto Diet. I will be sharing my overall experience and if I would do it again as well as some of my go-to resources so stay tuned for that!

WEEK 1

Week 1 of Keto was incredibly difficult. It only took me about two days to get into ketosis since I almost completely cut out carbs on day 1 (I limited myself to 15g of carbs per day). Plus, using these ketone test strips helped me to see how quickly it took to get into ketosis. Because I cut my carb intake so dramatically on day 1, I got the keto flu on day 2 of the diet. I had headaches, I felt lethargic and foggy headed, and my appetite was really weird. To no surprise I was really craving sweets and carbs (it’s probably a good idea to not get sushi and ice cream the night before starting like I did but might as well go big or go home before it all goes bye bye!), but as the week progressed my body adjusted and I was actually okay with eating copious amounts of cheese.
I also didn’t go to the gym this week because I wanted to let my body adjust and I’m glad I did. In my first week, I lost 4.6 lbs which was absolutely crazy considering all I was eating was cheese, butter, and oil (Not really but the amount of fat I was consuming was an ungodly 100g per day). Halfway into the week, I started taking these DHEA supplements because I heard it helped when adjusting to keto. I noticed a change but I’m not sure if that’s because I was getting over keto flu or if the pills were helping me.

WEEK 2

This week I felt sooo much better than last week. I started going to the gym and I noticed I wasn’t able to work out as hard as I used to because I was getting tired a lot faster. I read that doing high-intensity workouts isn’t good if you’re on the keto diet because you really need carbs to give you fuel for those workouts. Instead of doing interval training like I usually do I just walked at an incline on the treadmill and then lifted weights.
The beginning of the week I had a few headaches and I’m not sure if that was part of the keto flu or if I was just getting headaches but towards the end of the week they went away. This week I lost 1.8 lbs which isn’t as much as my first week but I think most of that was water weight and I’m also starting my period soon so I’m sure I’m retaining water from that.

WEEK 3

So I think my body is finally back to normal since starting the keto diet. I continued going to the gym this week and I am pretty much back to my normal workout routine, with the exception of interval training on the treadmill. The one time I did try sprinting, I was so exhausted, I couldn’t do the lifting weights part of my workout. I also noticed my skin was starting to break out. Most likely because of all the fat I have been eating.
This week my weight stalled and I only lost .2 lbs. I read that you can break a stall usually by having a cheat meal so I tested the theory out and ate Chinese food. Let me tell you, I felt so sick after cheating! I only had a small amount of orange chicken and lo mein but my stomach was still hurting and I was feeling bloated the whol enext day from it. Fingers crossed I will lose more weight next week!

WEEK 4

There is light at the light at the end of the tunnel! I have tried many different kinds of diets and this was the only one that I tried and did not feel deprived. There are tons of keto desserts to make and you can eat dairy which is not like many of the other diets. I really feel like I will continue to eat better after I finish this diet because I don’t feel like I was deprived on the keto diet. Although I am not a hundred percent sure if I would do this diet again because it doesn’t feel normal or healthy to eat all this fat!
While I did manage to lose another pound this week which was a little disappointing because I was losing it so quickly during the beginning. I will be writing a blog post about my overall experience on the keto diet and some of my favorite resources so stay on the look out for that!
